By actively preventing disease and decay through regular home care, professional dental cleanings, and regular exams, you will maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for life.

We recommend coming in for preventive care cleanings twice a year.

If you have periodontitis, then you’ll be asked to come in more often to prevent further spread of the disease… usually 3-4 times per year. Regular cleanings help prevent periodontitis (gum disease) and will keep your smile looking the best it can.

During your appointment, we’ll remove tartar or calculus build-up, remove debris, bacteria, and deposits from gum pockets, polish your teeth to help you retain that bright smile you desire, and reduce the chance of infection. We also recommend fluoride for adults and children since Tigard city water does not include a fluoride additive.

TIGARD’S DENTISTS RECOMMEND

Dental sealants to protect your smile.

Both children and adults can benefit from the application of dental sealants. Sealants are used to prevent food particles and plaque from getting into the grooves and depressions of your teeth that brushing and flossing can’t
easily reach.

Getting dental sealants is easy and painless, and have been used by dentists for decades to prevent decay. They’re highly effective in preventing decay on the biting surfaces of your teeth. A tooth-colored acrylic coating is applied with a brush to your teeth which seals each tooth from acids and plaque. They hold up well under the force of normal chewing and can last for many years. Ask about getting sealants during your routine maintenance.

Your risk increases for gum disease with several factors. Ask us about gum disease if you have any of the following:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching or grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition

Adults over 35 lose more teeth due to gum disease or periodontitis than from cavities or other issues. The best way to prevent cavities and gum disease is good oral hygiene techniques performed at least twice daily. Three out of four adults are affected by periodontitis at least once in their life.

Bacteria found in plaque irritate the gums causing them to turn red and bleed easily. If this bacteria is allowed to continue after this stage, it can allow the bone which holds your teeth to deteriorate, leading to tooth loss. Gum disease is treated by carefully removing the bacteria and substances that form in the pockets around the teeth. The removal of this material occurs on a microscopic level and requires great skill. Our dental team has had advanced training to effectively remove all of the bacteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your health and wellness is our priority.

How important is oral hygiene?

Regular oral hygiene not only removes plaque and food between teeth but also eliminates bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria builds to form plaque that can harden and lead to long-term ailments such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. Regular brushing, flossing, and periodic professional dental cleaning will keep your mouth healthy and prevent inflammation, infection, decay, and tooth loss.

Do I need a dental exam, and how often is one required?

Yes, all of our patients will require a dental exam. During your exam, we’ll evaluate your current dental care and provide suggestions for future care. We’ll evaluate your oral health and develop treatment plans. Dental exams should generally be taken every six months. During your regular maintenance appointment, we’ll inspect your teeth for any signs of decay. We may suggest you visit more frequently if you smoke, have cavities, periodontal disease, or other concerns.

What does a dental exam and cleaning include?

A typical dental exam will involve our team thoroughly cleaning your teeth, removing surface stains or deposits, removing tartar or calculus, check for signs of decay or gum disease. We’ll take a digital x-ray series at least once yearly, ask questions about your daily hygiene so we can assess its effectiveness, and suggest additions or alternatives of care. Well floss, polish, and recommend a fluoride varnish.

Is any preparation needed for a dental exam?

The best preparation for a dental exam is to practice good oral hygiene care at home. Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once a day is recommended. Be sure to clean your teeth prior to arriving for your appointment. Our team will be cleaning your teeth for you, but it’s helpful to remove food and plaque before your arrival so we can focus on the areas of concern. If you have changed insurance carriers, your overall health has changed since your last appointment, or habits have changed, please be ready to share that information during your visit. Also, be prepared to schedule your next appointment in 6 months or based on the schedule recommended by the dentist for your treatment.
